goal 4 - 1/12 accomplished...again

Ok...so I actually read two books this month. My academic read for January was The Present Future: Six Tough Questions for the Church by Reggie McNeal.



While this book had a lot of good things to say...it took a lot for me to finish it. Maybe it's because I was tired...or maybe it was just slow. I'm not sure.

One thing that I thought McNeal hammered right on the head was that a lot of churches nowadays act like a private club. What he means by this is that most of the activities that happen are for "club members" and most of the prayer that happens is for "club members" and the money goes to the "club members' activities". One of his challenges with this mindset is to get outside of the "club" and go do something in the community.

Be community minded - not club minded.

But anyway, I would definitely recommend this book. Even though it took me longer than it should have to read the little 150 pages that it is...I'd still say it's worth picking up.
